Postpartum hair fall: what's actually happening
18 January 2026 · 4 min read
During pregnancy, elevated oestrogen holds an unusually high share of hair follicles in the growth (anagen) phase. Shedding slows and hair looks thicker.
After delivery, oestrogen falls sharply and that oversized cohort of follicles enters the resting phase together. Two to four months later they shed together. This is telogen effluvium, and it typically resolves within six to twelve months.
What helps: correcting iron and vitamin D, adequate protein, and topical actives with evidence behind them — Redensyl, peptides, rosemary extract. What doesn't: heat styling on already fragile hair and tight ties on wet strands.
If shedding continues past a year, or you see widening at the parting rather than diffuse loss, that is a dermatologist conversation, not a supplement one.
